I was preparing dinner one night when I pulled out my spice drawer and saw a garlic bulb laying on top of my turmeric jar in the back corner. It had fallen into the drawer from the counter many weeks ago. I remember buying it at the grocery store but couldn’t find it when I needed it. Then there it was. The resilience of nature. That bulb of garlic lay there in the darkness and devoid of any sunlight or water, but it managed to sprout green shoots. It found a way to grow. I made this piece to honor nature’s resilience.
At the heart sits Earth, encircled by rings that echo both targets and cosmic energy fields, highlighting the planet’s vulnerability. Around it orbit symbols of biodiversity—animals, plants, the elements to form a living tapestry. Fire and water flow in opposition, evoking both the threats of climate change and the possibilities of renewal. I’m asking viewers to consider the interconnectedness of life and the responsibility we share in shaping the planet’s future.
Saving a planet in peril may seem an impossible task but when I remember that garlic bulb, I know through informed collective action, we can overcome the odds.
